Sony VPL-VW50 Projector

At almost half the price of the VW100, is the VW50 only half as good?

With the VPL-VW50, Sony has proved that SXRD really does have the potential to become a mass market phenomenon, serving up a scintillating performance that makes the £2,700 price tag seem almost ridiculously affordable.

Sony VPL-VW50 review

Can its performance match its impressive stats?

Good contrast ratio ; Sharp images

Doesn't take advantage of the really clever stuff

The Pearl certainly has some sparkle but £3,500 may be a bit much to shell out

Sony VPL-VW50

Relatively inexpensive for a 1080p projector; solid color decoding; reasonably bright; resolves every detail of 1080 resolution sources; highly adjustable picture; plenty of connectivity.

Less than perfect gamma, poor primary and secondary color accuracy.

Although the Sony VPL-VW50's picture quality falls short in a number of areas, it's easily one of the best values in 1080p front projection.

Sony VPL-VW50

Although the Sony VPL-VW50's picture quality falls short in a number of areas, it's easily one of the best values in 1080p front projection.

Relatively inexpensive for a 1080p projector ; Solid colour decoding ; Reasonably bright ; Resolves every detail of 1080 resolution sources ; Highly adjustable picture ; Plenty of connectivity

Less than perfect gamma ; Poor primary and secondary colour accuracy

All things considered, the VPL-VW50 is one of the better values in 1080p front projection today. It delivers all of the resolution that a 1080p projector should, has good colour decoding, processes 1080i HD sources well, and the price is ridiculously...

Sony VPL-VW50 SXRD Front Projector

The star of this year's CEDIA Expo was undoubtedly the VPL-VW50, the third generation of 1920x1080 SXRD front projectors from Sony. Listing for just half the price of the previous-generation VPL-VW100 (which garnered TPV's Product of the Year award for...

Despite the few problems I’ve cited, the VPL-VW50 produced a beautiful picture, especially considering its list price of only $5000. That makes it the second lowest-priced 1080p front projector on the market (the lowest being the Mitsubishi HC5000, an...

Sony VPL-VW50

We've long admired Sony's SXRD projection technology, first on the company's Qualia 004, and then on the 'Ruby' VPL-VW100. Now the Pearl has come along, delivering the technology at a price point that doesn't make our eyes water

Low long-term costs, Contrast ratio

Occasional dot crawl from bright images

Impressive HD features and performance at a highly competitive price point

Sony VPL-VW50 Pearl

Over that long wait, I've seen the Sony VW50 - also known as the Sony Pearl - a number of times at shows, and have always had an overall good impression of it, but also some reservations. Now, having worked with it for over a week, and logging about 40...

An excellent film-like, natural image (after color correction) ; Very good menus ; Extremely quiet ; Large but attractive ; Excellent black levels and shadow detail ; Invisible pixels at any distance (beyond two feet) ; A tremendous amount of image...

Out of the box color needs work (definitely at minimum an end user calibration disk, like AVIA) ; Image is a little soft ; Not overly bright (like many 1080p projectors), and very "not bright" if the zoom lens is near or at full telephoto) ; Unmounting...

For decades Sony has enjoyed a fabulous reputation, going back to the days when the Sony Trinitron set new standars for color TV's and professional monitors. Sony is of course a huge conglomerate, and typically, deserved or not, most people still...

Test Bench: Sony VPL-VW50 1080p SXRD Front-projector

The Sony's measured color decoder error on both its HDMI and component-video inputs was 0%. Red and blue color points showed mild oversaturation with either Wide or Normal color space selected, while the green color point displayed heavier saturation.

Sony VPL-VW50 "Pearl" Projector SXRD Projector

Well, the VPL-VW50 goes even farther. It's a sleek, gorgeous looking projector that retails for $5K. You read that right. Sony' SXRD front pro line started at $30K, dropped to $10K in the second generation Ruby (which remains available) and is now just...

Standard setting blacks and contrast, Smooth, naturally detailed three-chip image, Excellent feature set and usability, Standard setting value in front projection price/performance ratio

Slightly softer image than the single-chip 1080p DLPs we've seen
