Alienware Area-51M review: A gaming desktop stuffed inside a laptop

The Area 51m is a truly unique laptop. It's portable, but it packs in all of the power, and most of the customizability, that you'd want from a gaming desktop. Still, when other modern laptops are significantly thinner, cheaper, and almost as powerful,...

The most upgradeable laptop we’ve seen yet ; Fast desktop components ; Gorgeous new Alienware design ; All the ports you’ll ever need ; Glorious 17-inch 144Hz screen

Keyboard and trackpad feel dated ; Opening and upgrading parts is a bit of a pain ; Poor battery life (not surprisingly) ; Expensive compared to other modern laptops ; Heavy (especially with two large power adapters)

Alienware Area-51m review: a gaming laptop that goes the bigger-is-better school of design.

A desktop-laptop Frankenstein that's monstrously powerful.

Desktop-level power thanks to actual desktop components. There are plenty of accessible parts inside for possible upgrades. Modern-feeling new design.

As gaming laptops trend thinner and lighter, this one is bigger and heavier. No 4K screen option. Higher-end versions get expensive quickly.

On top of a satisfying visual refresh of Alienware's highest-end laptop, the Area-51m offers plenty of processing overhead from desktop CPUs and the latest RTX GPUs. There's promise of potentially great future upgradability, but it's not yet been proven.

Alienware Area-51m review: portable desktop

The Area-51m has plenty of brawn and a high price.

Desktop-class performance ; Very effective cooling system ; Upgradable CPU and GPU

Requires two large power adapters ; Portable in only the most literal sense ; Extremely high cost relative to other gaming systems

For the rest of us, I’m hopeful that Dell’s plans for upgradability pan out because I’m very curious to see where the Area-51m’s ideas on performance and portability go in the future.

Alienware Area-51m

Packing an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics chip and a desktop-class Intel Core i9, Alienware's massively rejiggered flagship, the Area-51m, is the best-performing gaming laptop we've tested, a monster in every sense a laptop can be.

Astounding graphics and general computing performance. Desktop-class processor. Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU. Built-in eye tracking. Comfortable keyboard. 144Hz display. Excellent component access for upgrades.

Heavy, bulky. Requires two power bricks. Expensive. No 4K display option. Very short battery life.

Bottom Line: Packing an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics chip and a desktop-class Intel Core i9, Alienware's massively rejiggered flagship, the Area-51m, is the best-performing gaming laptop we've tested, a monster in every sense a laptop can be.

Alienware Area-51m 5750

This big notebook is ideal for gaming, but has an uncomfortable keyboard.

Excellent big-screen entertainment Speedy

Poor battery life, Problematic keyboard

The 5750 is a fast gamer laptop with superb sound. It lacks a TV-tuner option, however, as do many comparable systems.

Alienware Area-51m

Strong performer can manage only 65 minutes on one battery charge.

We admired the UFO-crash-site-inspired name and the Martian green case. But this Area-51m is otherworldly expensive, and plenty of other desktop replacements have the same gaming chops for less.

Alienware Area 51m

The Alienware Area-51m is a solid gaming machine that doesn't give you the latest components, like the fastest Pentium CPU or PCI Express graphics. But in a mobile gaming world where the best cost north of $5,000, Alienware manages to provide a very...

Sturdy case. Nice design. Dual-band wireless. Relatively affordable

Not the latest, bleeding-edge components

The sturdy design and glowing alien eyes are what separate Alienware from other gaming notebooks, as does the relatively low price. Though it's not the "ultimate" gaming machine, the Area-51m will satisfy most serious gamers—and leave them some money...

Alienware Area-51m

Exclusive: The Alienware Area-51 offers unparalleled power in a sleek, redesigned chassis with the option to upgrade both the CPU and GPU.

Stunning space station aesthetic; Excellent graphics and overall performance; Lightning fast SSDs; All major components upgradable

Exorbitantly expensive

Alienware Area-51m 7700

Alienware is renowned for its powerful laptops and non-traditional designs, but can the company's latest offering - the Alienware Area-51m 7700 - offer us what we want from a laptop computer? We get travelling and find out. Forgive us for sounding...

Power, screen

Weight, size

We have mixed feelings about the Alienware Area-51m 7700 purely because it's so big and so heavy. In our mind the 7700 offers more brawn than brain. Think desktop replacement rather than portable office solution that you will want to take around the...

Alienware Area-51m Review: A no-holds-barred desktop gaming PC replacement

The Alienware Area-51m is a partially future-proof gaming desktop replacement that doesn't compromise on performance.

Desktop-class performance ; Mostly upgradable components

Expensive ; Low-battery life
