Editors' note: Toshiba officially announced it will stop producing HD DVD products, bringing an end to the format war. For that reason, CNET recommends that people avoid buying this player for high-definition movie playback.
Excellent image quality on HD DVD in 1080i mode; good upscaling performance on film-based DVDs; Ethernet jack included for firmware upgrades; onboard Dolby TrueHD decoding; much faster load times than its predecessor.
Somewhat disappointing picture quality in 1080p mode; ongoing format war means many films won't be available on HD DVD; no multichannel analog outputs.
The Toshiba HD-A20 is a perfectly competent HD DVD player, but it's not worth the extra money when compared to the budget Toshiba HD-A2.

Low-cost HD DVD player has a well-designed remote control, but image quality is constrained by the unit's 1080i resolution.
Well-designed on-screen menus, Ethernet connection for interactivity and updates
Outputs 1080i image resolution

There are numerous other reviews for the A2 floating around the Internet, but sometimes a new perspective is a good thing, especially when this will surely be at a great price point very soon (rumor
Excellent high definition video quality ; Excellent sound clarity for HDMI-ready systems ; Very good upconversion for standard DVDs ; Built in Ethernet for updates and Internet connectivity ; Dual video stream playback
Slow load times ; Slow video response for fast forward / rewind ; Noisy transport ; No backlight on the remote ; No 5.1 analogue audio outputs for legacy systems ; 1080i/60 max resolution (no 24p support)

The Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player is the entry-level unit in Toshiba's second generation of HD DVD players. When Toshiba launched its first generation HD-A1 we knew the price would come down in time, but a price reduction to below $400 for the HD-A2 coupled...
Very affordable HD DVD format player, stunning picture quality, offers HDMI upscaling, sleeker design than the first generation player
Few beyond the uncertainty of the format, lacks some advanced features such as 1080p output, multichannel analog outputs and RS-232 port

The first car I owned was a VW Bug that cost a whopping $500 in 1986. It wasn't the prettiest car on the block, but it got me from Point A to Point B. When Toshiba's first generation HD-A1 HD DVD player arrived on the scene it reminded me an awful lot...

This is Tohsiba's Blu-ray second-gen Blu-ray killer. An HD DVD and upconverting DVD player that retails for about a hundred bucks more than an iPod. What's not to like about that? The new model isn't loaded with new features that its predecessor didn't...
