Sony has tasked its new soundbar with achieving the near-impossible: Creating the immersive experience of a home theater, without the many speakers that typically work in unison to deliver that kind of sound. To add to the challenge, Sony attempted to...
Simple setup Compact design Stellar sound for music Effective virtual Dolby Atmos
Lacks Wi-Fi connectivity Not quite as immersive as true surround sound
The Sony HT-G700 is a value for its price, offering great sound for both music and movies while doing so in a minimalist package. While its technology commendably compensates for its lack of true surround sound, it doesn’t totally make up for the...

The Sony HT-G700 is an affordable Atmos soundbar that's big on sound and value
Big, weighty sound ; Impressive Atmos effect ; Solid and stylish
Lack of crispness and clarity ; No streaming functionality
The Sony HT-G700 is big on sound and on value – for cinematic scale and weight, there are few better soundbars at the price

The Sony HT-G700 leads its features on delivering “cinematic surround sound” from a 3.1-channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X soundbar and wireless subwoofer. Physically, those three channels face forward and have nothing to do with surround nor the height...
Compact Atmos/DTS:X bar Immersive AE for lesser signals Bluetooth for TV and music
No dedicated height/surround drivers Height/surround claims overstated
Sony’s 3.1-channel soundbar delivers TV and movie sound respectably, and music averagely. It’s not class-leading at the price, and the claims for delivering virtual height and surround are overstated, but it’s a nice little soundbar that will perfectly...

Sony's Dolby Atmos soundbar is excellent for home theater and music even though it lacks "true" height effects.

If you want extra audio presence for your TV then the HT-G700 is worth consideration. But its surround soundstage isn't entirely convincing.
Compact and tidily finished ; Wireless subwoofer offers extra convenience (and wallop) ; Far more dynamic and direct a listen than virtually every TV
Soundbar and subwoofer aren’t on great terms ; Tonality is skewed - with high frequencies in particular quite hard work ; Doesn’t make good on claims of Atmos-style surround sound
If you want a tidy and discreet soundbar to bring significant extra presence to your TV sound then the HT-G700 is worth your consideration. If you're hoping for some Dolby Atmos-style immersion, though - or proper tonal balance where music is concerned...

Its arsenal of virtual 3D modes is impressive, but without Wi-Fi, the HT-G700 is missing a bevy of key features given its price tag.
Support for virtual 3D modes from Dolby, DTS, and Sony ; Crisp, punchy sound ; Easy setup ; Night and voice enhancer modes
Virtual 3D modes sound harsh at times ; No Wi-Fi support ; Remote is tricky to use
The Sony HT-G700 offers an embarrassment of riches as far as virtual 3D audio engines are concerned; indeed, if you ever wanted the opportunity to stack the virtual 3D sound technology of Dolby, DTS, and Sony against each other, this versatile soundbar...

A mid-range, Dolby Atmos soundbar from Sony that promises a little too much.
Simple design ; Switch quickly between modes via remote ; Wireless-nature of subwoofer gives flexibility with placement
HDMI cable not included ; Subwoofer is quite big and heavy

This Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar promises a lot.
Minimalist, classy design ; Easy to use, key connectivity options supported ; Support for Dolby Atmos, 4K Dolby Vision passthrough, HDMI CEC ; Very good subwoofer ; Good all-round sound
Vertical surround mode is awkward ; Volume lacks uniformity
While an affordable soundbar such as the

While other Dolby Atmos soundbars are finding new ways to add more speakers, Sony has taken a different tack: Atmos virtualization. Instead of loading up speakers that bounce sound off your walls for sonic immersion, bars like Sony's new HT-G700 use...
Clear, detailed sound Slim and simple design Impressive Dolby Atmos virtualization
Not upgradeable No WiFi Lack of height speakers limits Atmos immersion
Sony’s HT-G700 sounds quite good, offering a surprisingly expansive soundstage for everything from music to Dolby Atmos content. It offers future-proofing features like eARC, and supports every sound format you could want, all in a decidedly small form...

Great sound output ; Easy to set up ; Support for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X ; Simple, easy to use remote control
Not true Dolby Atmos surround sound ; No internet connectivity or app support
If you have a budget of 40K for a premium soundbar then yes, you can consider the Sony HT-G700. It has fantastic sound output, supports Dolby Atmos, 4K HDR passthrough with Dolby Vision support and a simple plug and play setup. What it lacks is any...
