Apple MacBook (late 2009)

Apple introduces an LED-backlit display and a multitouch trackpad on its cheapest MacBook

Polycarbonate unibody design, LED-backlit display, multitouch glass trackpad, sturdy body, excellent keyboard

No backlit keyboard, poor vertical viewing angles, non-removable battery, no SD card reader or FireWire port

Apple's entry-level MacBook improves on its predecessor by offering an upgraded, LED-backlit display, a unibody enclosure and a glass, multitouch trackpad. The glossy display is inferior to the screen on the MacBook Pro model of the same size, and the...

Apple MacBook - 2009 Edition (MC207B/A)

It's Apple's most affordable MacBook, but is the refreshed entry-level 13in model the best value option?

That's a nice upgrade, but predictably it's there to compensate for the features you miss. Most notably this includes the backlit keyboard, but also FireWire and, worst of all, the SD card reader. We'll quite happily live without a backlit keyboard and...

Apple Mac Pro (Winter 2009) review: Apple Mac Pro (Winter 2009)

In addition to revamping its iMac and Mac Mini desktops in the beginning of March, Apple also updated its highest end professional-level Mac Pros. Available as before in four- and eight-core configurations, the newest Mac Pros have a number of new...

Best-in-class desktop design; interior makes upgrades and parts replacement simple; strong performance on HD video and 3D rendering thanks to new Intel CPU and faster RAM

Relatively slow performance on programs such as Photoshop that rely on single-core CPU speed; we wish it had eSATA instead of FireWire 800 for external hard-drive connections.

Apple's new eight-core Mac Pro demonstrates marked improvements over the older model in high-intensity digital media and multitasking scenarios. We also love the design tweaks that improve on Apple's already industry-leading sensibilities. Any...

Apple MacBook Pro 2009 (2.66GHz review

Editors' note: As of June 2009, the product reviewed here has been replaced by an updated model .

New aluminum unibody construction comes to the 17-inch model; useful multitouch trackpad gestures; attractive edge-to-edge glass on display; dual graphics provide more power or more battery life.

All-clicking trackpad is a bit awkward; matte screen option costs extra; switching GPUs is not as seamless as it should be.

A little late to the party, Apple's redesigned 17-inch MacBook Pro joins the 15-inch model with a redesigned aluminum body, new trackpad with expanded functionality, and a dual-graphics setup for either longer battery life or better performance.

Apple MacBook (Spring 2009)

The Apple MacBook may look the same as before, but it's had a Spring makeover and is now a better deal than ever.

Solid build quality ; Excellent screen ; New multi-touch trackpad ; High performance ; Affordable

No backlit keyboard ; No HDMI or FireWire

If you have an Apple MacBook already there is no compelling reason to upgrade to this one. While multi-touch is a nice addition, serious productivity hounds will be using a dedicated mouse anyway. But, if you're looking to buy a new laptop and like the...

Apple Mac Pro (2009)

Apple's aluminium-encased Mac Pro is about as serious a workstation computer you can get. The machine is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside (there's not a cable in sight!), and Apple should be commended for once again producing a...

The Mac Pro was formally announced in 2006 and completes Apple's transition from the PowerPC to x86 architecture. Early last year, Apple unveiled the first 3.2GHz, dual quad-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro. The latest Mac Pro reviewed here, which was...
